What is a ‘Cookie’?

A bit different from the ones above !

A “cookie” is a piece of information that is stored on your computer’s hard drive which records how you move your way around a website so that, when you revisit that website, it can present tailored options based on the information stored about your last visit. Cookies can also be used to analyse traffic and for advertising and marketing purposes.

Cookies are used by nearly all websites and do not harm your system.

If you want to check or change what types of cookies you accept, this can usually be altered within your browser settings. You can block cookies at any time by activating the setting on your browser that allows you to refuse the setting of all or some cookies. However, if you use your browser settings to block all cookies (including essential cookies) you may not be able to access all or parts of the site.

How I use cookies

I use cookies for the essential functioning of the website and analytics only. Analytics use traffic log cookies to identify which pages are being used. This helps analyse data via Google Analytics about web page traffic and improve the website in order to tailor it to clients needs.

Overall, cookies help provide you with a better website, by enabling me to monitor which pages you find useful and which you do not. A cookie in no way gives me access to your computer or any information about you, other than the data you choose to share with me.

These analytic or functional Cookies are not placed on your device unless you click on the OK button in the cookie banner, which displays the first time you enter the website. They will not be used if you do not click OK to give your consent. At this point in time that is the only way to remove the banner due to limitations of the website host platform, which currently does not give a yes or no option.
You can choose to accept or decline cookies in general. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser setting to decline cookies if you prefer. This may prevent you from taking full advantage of the website.

Google Analytics

Each time you visit a website Google Analytics automatically tracks information such as(but not limited to) your geographical location, IP address, browser type, browser version, operating system, referral source, page views, length of visit, the times and dates you visit the site, navigation paths, whether you are a new visitor or a returning visitor.

When you visit therapy-edinburgh.co.uk the information collected by Google Analytics may be used by me to customise the website according to your interests and help improve products and services. Cookies are only used to supply me with this information if you consent by clicking ‘OK’ in the cookie bar. Advertising cookies will not be used.

Cookies are either:

Session cookies: these are only stored on your computer during your web session and are automatically deleted when you close your browser – they usually store an anonymous session ID allowing you to browse a website without having to log in to each page but they do not collect any personal data from your computer; or

Persistent cookies: a persistent cookie is stored as a file on your computer and it remains there when you close your web browser. The cookie can be read by the website that created it when you visit that website again. I use persistent cookies for Google Analytics.

Cookies can also be categorised as follows:

Strictly necessary cookies: These cookies are essential to enable you to use the website effectively, such as when buying a product and / or service, and therefore cannot be turned off. Without these cookies, the services available to you on our website cannot be provided. These cookies do not gather information about you that could be used for marketing or remembering where you have been on the internet.

Performance cookies: These cookies enable us to monitor and improve the performance of the website. For example, they allow visit counts, identify traffic sources and see which parts of the site are most popular.

Functionality cookies: These cookies allow my website to remember choices you make and provide enhanced features. For instance, I may be able to provide you with news or updates relevant to the services you use. They may also be used to provide services you have requested such as viewing a video or commenting on a blog. The information these cookies collect is usually anonymised.
